Privacy Policy for Sown
Last updated 6 September 2026
Sown does not collect your data. There is no account, no server, no analytics, and no tracking. What you memorize, what you write, and how you practice are stored on your device. Backups you choose to make may be stored elsewhere.
This policy is short because the app is simple: Sown is a Scripture memory app that runs on your iPhone. It ships with its Bible text already inside it, so it works with the network turned off.
What Sown stores, and where
- The passages you carry, your review history, your journeys and any private notes you write — stored in the app's own storage on your device.
- Small preferences such as your reading edition and reminder times.
- If you choose to use an optional online edition, the access key you enter is stored in the iOS Keychain on your device.
None of this is transmitted to us. We have no server to transmit it to.
What Sown never collects
- No account, email address, or sign-in of any kind.
- No analytics, usage statistics, telemetry, or crash reporting.
- No advertising identifier, and no tracking across apps or websites — so Sown never shows the "Ask App Not to Track" prompt, because there is nothing to ask about.
- No third-party SDKs. Sown contains no advertising, attribution, or analytics code.
When Sown uses the network
Sown makes network requests in exactly one situation: when you turn on an optional online Bible edition (ESV or NLT) in Settings. These editions are published by others and are not included in the app, so the app asks the publisher for the passage you are reading.
- Optional online editions are switched off when you install Sown. Until you turn one on yourself, the app makes no network requests at all.
- When enabled, the request contains the passage reference (for example
John 3:16) and, for ESV, the access key you provided. The NLT edition can also be used without a key. - The request goes directly from your device to the publisher —
api.esv.orgorapi.nlt.to— over HTTPS. It does not pass through us. - The publisher also receives normal connection information, including your IP address, and handles the request under its own privacy policy.
What is never sent: your journey descriptions, private notes, prayers, review history or practice schedule. Sown does not add an advertising identifier or analytics identifier to these requests.
Searching and the on-device model
When you describe what you are carrying and Sown suggests passages, that search runs entirely on your device against the Bible text bundled inside the app. What you type is not uploaded anywhere. Where Sown uses Apple Intelligence, it uses Apple's on-device model; your words do not leave the phone for that either.
Notifications
Sown asks permission to send notifications only if you turn a reminder on yourself. It never asks at launch. Reminders contain fixed, neutral wording — never a verse or anything you wrote. The optional Carry widget can display a passage you select on your Home or Lock Screen; that passage is shared locally between the app and widget.
Backups you make
You can export a backup file. It is written wherever you choose to put it, such as Files or iCloud Drive, and it is governed from that point by your own settings for that location. Sown does not upload backups to a Sown service. iOS device backups may also include app data, depending on your Apple settings.
Children
Sown does not collect personal data from children. The app includes the full Bible; its App Store age rating describes the content available.
Changes
If this policy ever changes, the updated date above changes with it. If a future version of Sown ever collected anything, that would be stated here plainly and before the fact.
